Academic Year Program is designated by the U.S. Department of State as an Exchange Visitor Program, and participants must obtain a J-1 exchange visa for the duration of the program. Students from more then 30 countries have the opportunity to explore the American way of life and be exposed to the culture on a daily basis, rather than see it as an ordinary tourist. Through this experience American hosts find it possible to know their guest's national identity first hand.

Why should you become an academic year student?

Work Experience gives the chance to participate in this program offering you the following opportunities

• To live with an American host family and spend an exciting year with American teenagers in a U.S.public high school;
• You will have the opportunity to discover a new country, a new mentality;
• To improve your English skills with help from your American family, friends and high school;
• To expand your vision of the world and yourselves and become more independent;
• You could make life-long friends and you'll come to know what it is like to be an American.

To participate in this program, tha candidates must :

• Be between 15 and 18 years of age upon arrival;
• Be of good health, sufficient to succeed on an intellectually, physically and emotionally rigorous program;
• Have very good English abilities, above average academic skills;
• Not have graduated from high school in the home country;
• Have demonstrated openness, flexibility, above average maturity, and a sincere desire to participate in an intercultural program.

All of these will be checked by an official Work Experience representative!

• Enrollment in a U.S. public high school for one or two semesters
• Room and board with a volunteer host family
• Support and supervision of a local Representative
• DS-2019 supporting application for J-1 visa
• Health and accident insurance

With this program you could be enrolled for one semester (5 months) from January to June or for entire school year (10 months) from August to June You will need to check with your U.S. high school guidance counselor to determine which amount of time best fits your needs and if you are able to receive credit during your time abroad. Whether you receive credit for this experience depends on your own high school's policy on foreign study credits.

Academic Year Program is authorised to use the DS-2019 forms in order to obtain the J-1 exchange visa for applicants. Through this program, Work Experience offer every applicant the chance to become a young "ambassadors" of their country, sharing the daily routine of American family life and customs, as well as the responsibilities and support as family members.
